Liberal Studies Petitions
The College of Engineering recommends students enroll in courses identified as fulfilling the Liberal Studies categories as listed in the current University Courses of Study. However, students may petition additional courses not identified and not already denied by the College. The criteria for such a petition are outlined below:

The course must:

1. be from outside the College of Arts and Sciences (A&S) and the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (CALS), unless:
  • course is a Foreign Language (not a literature course). These will automatically be approved;
  • the course is from A&S and CALS but only if under three credits, such as some performing and studio art courses under the course prefixes ART, MUSIC, and PMA.

2. not already have been approved or denied by the College of Engineering. Courses on the Other Yes list are already approved and you do not need to complete a petition. Courses on the Other No list have been denied for all students and you cannot petition them again.

If a student feels strongly that an A&S or a CALS course should be designated as Liberal Studies, the student should contact the instructor of the course directly and request that the instructor submit the course to their college Registrar's Office for consideration as a Liberal Studies designation. If approved by the A&S or the CALS Registrar's Offices, the College of Engineering will honor the designation.
